Frequently Asked Questions
Can musical instruments be used in Church services?
God's word has warned us to not follow the traditions of man. We are to have authority from God on all matters. The Old Testament used musical instruments in serving God. In 2 Chronicles 29:25 we can find the authority for doing this.
2 Chronicles 29:25 And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David,
and of Gad the king’s seer, and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.
In the New Testament the commandment is to sing with a melody in our hearts.
Matthew 26:30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Acts 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
1 Corinthians 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Hebrews 2:12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
It's not in our control to add any musical instruments to the song services. There is no authority in the New Testament for the use of any musical instruments. I hope you can see how easy it would be to add things because they seem to be good to us, but try to imagine if someone was trying to please you with something they liked, but didn't think to ask you if you liked it. Maybe a meal is offered to you with something they liked, such as grasshoppers or chocolate cover ants. I don't know maybe you like these things but I hope you get the picture. What seems to be a good thing to someone doesn't make it right with God. We must not add to or take away from the written word.
